Everything You Need to Know About Winter Lawn Care

Do you want to keep your lawn healthy during the winter?

We don't all have the opportunity to have fresh, green yards during the colder months. That doesn't mean that it's not important to take care of the yard so it can rise anew when spring comes around.

But how do you take care of your lawn care in the winter?

We want to help so you can keep your lawn in good condition despite the wintery conditions. Keep reading to learn everything that you need to know about winter lawn care.

Aerate Your Lawn

Aerating your lawn can make a big difference when it comes to how it looks after the winter has passed.

When your lawn's soil has become compacted, or there's a layer of thick, dead plant matter underneath the lawn's surface, it stops your lawn from growing to its full potential. As winter comes around and there are more opportunities for compaction, this gets worse.

Take care of your lawn by aerating it before the first snowfall.

Aerating is tricky if you don't have the right tools, so it's good to rent an aerator or talk to a professional. The aerator plucks a tube-shaped section of dirt from the lawn so nutrients and water can get through. Leave those soil plugs around the lawn so they can go back into the earth.

Be Careful When It Snows

Snow, and some of the hazards that come with it, can do serious damage to your lawn.

Consider how heavy snow is. The extra weight will push down onto your grass and soil if you don't take care of it. When you're shovelling your sidewalk or driveway, it's tempting to pile your snow onto your lawn to keep it away from anyone walking.

While this is sometimes unavoidable, do your best to keep it to a minimum or spread it evenly across your lawn. You don't want the weight of snow to compact your grass further.

If you choose to use de-icers, keep them away from your lawn. The salt and chemicals aren't good for plants, and they can dry your lawn out.

Fertilise Now

This is a great time to fertilise your soil. There are winterizing soils intended to stay in place through cold weather, so spring brings you green and healthy grass.

Fertilise before the first frost, so it's easy for the fertiliser to permeate the soil.

Take Care of Stray Weeds

Just because your grass isn't growing doesn't mean that other plants aren't growing within your lawn.

Snowfall and rain often result in weed growth. Growth is slower than during the warmer months, so it's easier to catch these weeds before they do damage.

After the snow melts from your lawn, do a quick lookover, and peel away any weeds that pop up.
