5 Tips To Keep Your Lawn Healthy This Year

As winter draws to a close, so does our seasonal break from lawn maintenance. On the bright side, there are ways to make your lawncare routine less taxing.

Specifically, if you keep your lawn well-maintained, it's easier to care for. By staying on top of a few, simple lawn maintenance steps, you prevent frustrating lawn problems before they start.

So, to help you do this, we've written you this guide. In it are the 5 essential 2021 lawn tips you need to keep your lawn healthy and attractive. Do yourself a favour: follow these steps to make lawncare easy this year.

1. Don't Scalp Your Lawn

Obviously, your grass will survive being trimmed. But that doesn't mean you should shave your lawn all the way down to its roots.

The fact is, the part that you see above the ground is just as important as the roots are for keeping your grass alive. It's the green part that converts the sun's rays into food through photosynthesis.

So, cutting your grass any shorter than 3 inches means that you're seriously injuring it. This makes it difficult for the grass to stay alive. Then, parasites and weeds will easily overpower your weak, unhealthy grass.

Prevent this by setting your mower to cut at 3 inches or higher. Keeping the blade sharp will help, too.

2. Water Appropriately

The general rule of thumb is to water deeply but infrequently. That is, you should water only every other day. But when you water, you want to soak the lawn.

Also, it's best to water early in the morning, before the day gets too hot. Otherwise, the heat will evaporate a lot of the water faster than your lawn can drink it.

3. Fertilize Twice Per Year

Fertilize at the beginning of each fall and spring. The spring feeding essentially jumpstarts your lawn as it wakes up from its winter slumber.

And the fall feeding repairs any damage done by the hot summer sun. It also helps the roots keep growing even when the surface growth stops for the year.

Additionally, make sure you follow any local restrictions regarding the use of chemical fertilizers.

4. Spray Weeds Twice Per Year

Weeds should also be sprayed every spring and fall. Again, find out if there are any restrictions in your area that prohibit the use of certain weedkillers.

And, before you spray the whole lawn, test the weedkiller first to make sure it doesn't harm your grass.

5. Aerate Each Fall

Lastly, aerating your lawn each fall reduces soil compaction. This gives the roots room to more easily absorb water and soil nutrients. Plus, if you need to reseed your lawn, the best time to do it is just after aeration.
